The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE SCGF) program to provide support for outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S. THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 30, 2009.

EPA’s National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS)
EPA established the National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS) in 1986 to foster a growing interest among higher education students in environmental careers. The NNEMS program is a comprehensive fellowship program that provides undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to participate in a fellowship project that is directly related to their field of study. The deadline for submitting applications for the FY 2010 program is Friday, February 5, 2010 (i.e., application materials must be postmarked by that date to be eligible for consideration).
Projects for the FY 2010 program are being offered in the categories of: (1) Environmental Policy, Regulation, and Law; (2) Environmental Management and Administration; (3) Environmental Science; and (4) Public Relations and Communications. GET INVOLVED IN SUMMER RESEARCH WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF NAVY!
The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP), provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer.
NREIP is a ten week summer research opportunity for undergraduate Juniors & Seniors, and Graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory. The stipend amounts for the program are $7500 for undergraduate students and $10,000 for graduate students. U.S. citizenship required; Permanent residents accepted at certain labs. The online application is currently open at www.asee.org/nreip and must be completed by January 8, 2010. All accompanying documents (official transcripts and reference letters) are due by January 11, 2010.

HIRA JAIN SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Hira Jain and Mrs. Sunita Jain of Glastonbury, Connecticut established a permanent endowment fund to provide scholarships for academically outstanding incoming or continuing undergraduate or graduate students enrolled full time at UConn. Candidates for the scholarship may but are not required to demonstrate financial need. Priority consideration, but not an absolute preference will be given to students of Asian Indian ancestry. The amount of the annual scholarship is at least $500. The deadline is February 10, 2010, and the award will be announced before the close of the spring 2010 semester. 2009-2010 CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM AWARDS
The deadline for the Creative Writing Program’s cash-prize-awarding writing contests is DECEMBER 1. Prizes are available for both graduate and undergraduate students in all genres and in visual arts. Students from any Department may enter. Some of the awards in the past have carried prizes of over $4000.
Among the prizes now accepting submissions are the Wallace Stevens Poetry Contest ($1750 in prizes to be awarded), the Collins Literary Prizes (prizes vary annually; in these past these have totaled over $8000), the Hackman Award for Short Fiction ($1500 in prizes), and several Aetna Writing Awards (prizes of over $2000 to be awarded).
Students should follow the submission guidelines listed on the "Contest" section of our website at http://www.creativewriting.uconn.edu/contests.php. All submissions to the writing contests will be considered for publication in the 2010 Long River Review.

FREEMAN INDONESIA NONPROFIT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Freeman Indonesia Nonprofit Internship Program (FINIP), funded by the Freeman Foundation, aims to develop student leaders and strengthen the nonprofit sector in Indonesia. IIE will select and pair 10 Indonesian students pursuing U.S. degrees with 10 U.S. undergraduates and arrange internships for them to work together in an Indonesian nonprofit organization.
The 9-week experience, from June 15 to August 17, 2010, arranged by IIE’s partner organization, the Indonesian International Education Foundation (IIEF), will take place in three cities: Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta.
