ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE HONORS PROGRAM


UCONN HONORS STUDENT IS AWARDED MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Michelle Prairie, recent award recipient of the prestigious Marshall scholarship. Marshall scholarships are funded by the British government and are extended to “intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country’s future leaders” for academic study in the United Kingdom. Michelle will spend the next two years abroad studying for two master’s degrees in development economics. View the UConn Advance article here. VOLUNTEER FOR THE SEARCH FOR A PRE-LAW ADVISOR

The Honors Program is looking for volunteers for the search for a pre-law advisor. Students would meet with and provide feedback on interviewees for the new position mid-January (before classes begin!). View the job description here. NEW HONORS STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN ARMENIA

The Office of Study Abroad and Honors Program are offering a new study abroad opportunity to Honors students! Archaeological Field School in Armenian Prehistory will allow students to participate in archaeological excavations and environmental reconstructions at two Stone Age sites in Armenia that document a variety of important milestones in human biological, cognitive, and cultural evolution. Participating students will enroll in two courses: ANTH 3090 (Directed Field Research in Anthropology) for 1 honors credit during spring 2009 and and ANTH 3990 (Fieldwork in Archaeology) for 6 honors credits during summer 2009. This study abroad program offers a hands-on learning experience in all aspects of the field school, including excavation and site survey, as well as laboratory techniques such as artifact preparation, measurement, illustration, and analysis.

JUST SO YOU KNOW... DR. HOFFMANN'S OFFICE IS MOVING!

Jessamy Hoffmann will be moving to a new office on Tuesday, December 9. Her e-mail address will remain the same but after the ninth her phone number will be 486-3832 and she will be located in CUE 416. Advisees wishing to make an appointment during a non-registration period of the semester should call 486-4223 to do so. During registration advising, advisees will still make appointments via the online ADVAPP system.

 

NEW LIBRARY RESOURCES FOR HONORS STUDENTS!

Did you know? Honors students have exclusive library privileges—including 6-month borrowing periods and no limit on the number of borrowed books. The Undergraduate Education Team at the Homer Babbidge Library has developed a new web resource for Honors students working on thesis projects. The Honors Thesis Toolbox features step-by-step information on how to get started on literary research. This webpage also provides links to countless other resources and includes:

 

CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES


INTERESTED IN MEDICINE OR DENTISTRY?

NEW COURSE! PNB 3279 (section 001) Mini-Medical/Dental School: Insights into Dental Science and Clinical Medicine is a new course being offered to students who want to learn more about careers in medicine and dentistry. For the spring 2009 semester this course will be offered as a satisfactory/unsatisfactory course, which will be honors sponsored. It will not be available for honors credit as it will not be possible to earn a letter grade in the course. The Mini-Medical/Dental School is an informative course to take and will cover topics such as orthopedic surgery with Dr. Laurencin, Dean of the School of Medicine, and pathology with Dr. Eisenberg, Professor of Oral Pathology.

 

THE OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Office of Undergraduate Research offers two opportunities to outstanding students –the Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF) and Frontiers in Undergraduate Research.

SURF provides up to $3500 in funding for students to participate in research, scholarship, or creative projects over the summer. To be eligible, undergraduate students must be planning to graduate no earlier than May 2010. Applications and instructions for applying (including dates of informational workshops for student applicants) are available on-line at www.our.uconn.edu under the SURF tab. The deadline to apply for SURF is Friday, February 6, 2009. Interested students should attend the next informational session on SURF on January 23, at 4:00 p.m. in CUE 134.

Frontiers in Undergraduate Research is the annual poster exhibition of student research, scholarship, and creative projects. Frontiers will be held on Friday, April 17, 2009, and Saturday, April 18, 2009. Any undergraduate student may apply to showcase his or her work. Applications and instructions for applying are available on-line at www.our.uconn.edu under the Frontiers tab. The deadline to apply for Frontiers is Friday, February 20, 2009.

THE OFFICE OF NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

  • JACK KENT COOKE SCHOLARSHIP PRE-APPLICATION
    The Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship is awarded to college seniors who are planning to attend graduate school. The Foundation is looking for exceptional students with financial need who have demonstrated leadership and public service, and an appreciation for the arts and humanities. The scholarship provides funding for up to six years of graduate work. Students interested in being nominated by UConn must submit a pre-application, with letters of intent from faculty willing to write recommendations.   • PHI KAPPA PHI SCHOLARSHIPS
    Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and largest Honors society, offers various scholarship opportunities to its members throughout the academic year. Members interested in applying for a Fellowship for graduate or professional study must complete and submit the application to the UConn chapter by February 1, 2008! Applications for Literacy Grants are due February 4, 2008. For more information, visit Phi Kappa Phi online.
