SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH
The National Institutes of Health offer a scholarship opportunity to students that come from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social-science health related research. These scholarships cover tuition and educational expenses for up to $20,000 a year and are sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, one of the world foremost centers for biomedical research and research based training.

THE AMGEN SCHOLARS SUMMER PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON
The Undergraduate Research Program at the University of Washington is accepting applications for our UW Amgen Scholars Summer Program. This program enables students to explore connections between their undergraduate major areas of study and graduate or professional work focused on biotechnology and related fields. UW Amgen Scholars receive housing, travel assistance, and stipends.
Amgen Scholars Program applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, undergraduate students enrolled in accredited four-year colleges and universities, and sophomores (with atleast 3 semesters completed), juniors or non-graduating seniors at the start of the program. Program applicants must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above and an interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D

SUMMER PROGRAM FOR FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES IN THE SCIENCES...
The Gateways to the Laboratory Summer Program is a ten week program that allows freshman and sophomore underrepresented minority and/or disadvantaged students to experience life as an MD-PhD student. The federal NIH definition of underrepresented minority (in the sciences) and/or disadvantaged is available on-line HERE.
The Gateways students experience an exciting summer conducting independent research projects in a lab at one of our three institutions, while participating in a number of clinical activities including scrubbing into surgeries. At the end of the summer, the Gateways students give presentations of their research. The Gateways to the Laboratory Program awards a stipend and reimburses the students for their travel expenses.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES AT THE NEW JERSEY CENTER FOR ENGINEERED PARTICULATES
The New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates (NJCEP) will host its National Science Foundation funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site in Summer of 2008. During the 10-week program, 10 undergraduate students, selected competitively from universities throughout the US, will live on campus while working on challenging research alongside NJIT faculty and graduate students. The research projects will involve unique topics dealing with synthesis, characterization, and applications of nano-particles as engineered composites, focusing on developing fundamental understanding of particle interactions and their influence on final product. Students will benefit from a strong research group that includes established faculty researchers and their graduate students, working on collaborative activities in nanotechnology.

NCHC OFFERS 'PARTNERS IN THE PARKS' EXPERIENCE
The National Collegiate Honors Council is offering students worldwide the opportunity to explore the parks of New York City... FIRE ISLAND TO ELLIS ISLAND--Arrive May 18th and return home May 25th
'Fire Island to Ellis Island' starts on the seafront, beaches and islands that define New York City and then leads into the city itself. Beginning in Oyster Bay, Long Island aboard Christeen, the only reconstructed gaff-rigged oyster sloop in America, the group will then participate in an overnight camping trip with park rangers. The program then moves to Brooklyn and a city rich with national, state and city parks. The investigations will take the group to the birthplace of Theodore Roosevelt, the African Burial Ground in lower Manhattan, and more! Students participating in this program will be housed at the C. W. Post Campus of Long Island University for the first three days and then at the Brooklyn Campus for the city component. Photography faculty will provide an opening session on shooting landscapes and cityscapes!

SUMMER JOB POSITIONS WITH THE CENTER FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The Center for Academic Programs (CAP) is accepting applications for several positions for the Student Support Services and Upward Bound/ConnCAP Summer Programs. The programs operate during late June, July and the first week in August. CAP and Upward Bound are seeking qualified graduates and undergraduates with experience working with multi-cultural communities to fill these positions during the Summer Session. STUDYING PRE-HEALTH? BE A MENTOR!
The Minority Association for Pre-Health Students (MAPS) is coordinating a mentoring program for students that were a part of high school weekend and summer programs with the UConn Health Center. These students are now enrolled at Storrs and are all from the inner-city Hartford area. We are looking to find mentors who would be interested in working with these students. MAPS has worked with UCHC to arrange a series of health professional lectures with the overall goal of creating a social group that provides these students with guidance in their pursuit of a career in medicine and dentistry.
