ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE HONORS PROGRAM
APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR THE OAKLAWN SCHOLARSHIP
Every year, the Honors Program offers a scholarship competition to sophomores and juniors that were not offered merit aid from the university. The Oaklawn scholarship is a renewable grant that is applied directly towards the student's tuition. Award recipients are chosen on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in the Honors Program, and leadership experience. The scholarship provides up to $1,000 per semester; recipients that remain in good standing in Honors will continute to receive the award every semester until graduation, provided that the recipient submits an annual report on their activities.

ATTENTION FIRST YEAR STUDENTS!
Are you undecided on your major or career goals?
ExpLORE is a four semester personalized career development program that helps UConn students make major and career decisions while developing skills to succeed in their future professions. You will also get to know your peers and develop networking opportunities early in your college career. ExpLORE begins in the first semester of your sophomore year. However, first year students interested in getting a head start on the career decision-making process may join Pre-ExpLORE. Students who stay with Pre-ExpLORE will automatically be enrolled in ExpLORE in their sophomore year if they wish.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
THE DROTCH SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS IN THE SCIENCES
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers many scholarships to students. The Paul L. Drotch Scholarship is intended for students majoring in biological sciences, EEB, MCB, or PNB that have demonstrated both financial need and outstanding academic performance. The application is available online and should be returned to Carol Blow in TLS 161 by March 7, 2008.

SCHOLARSHIP IN THE SCIENCES
The NOAA offers scholarships for students that will be juniors in the fall 2008. The Hollings scholarship seeks to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy through this award. The scholarship includes academic assistance during the academic year of the award, a 10-week summer internship, and the possibility of another year of academic assistance. Through this unique experience, students will gain hands on experience and training for a career in the environmental sciences!

STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS FROM THE ROPER CENTER
UConn undergraduates of all majors are eligible to apply for research grants for the fall and spring semesters. The awards will pay up to $500 a semester! Students are required to submit a proposal outlining an original research project to be carried out that uses or expands upon the data files in the Roper Center, as well as submit an undergraduate research application available online at the OUR website. JOIN THE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP COMMISSION
The Global Leadership Commission seeks new members! Its objective is to provide a forum to bring well-known, respected, and dynamic individuals who can offer their knowledge and expertise to the University of Connecticut. Some of the organization's past speakers have included Senator Joseph Lieberman, Dr. John Rowe, and Ms. Dona Young of the Phoenix Corporation. Want to affect the laws that govern your life? Attend A Day at the Capitol on Friday, February 22, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.! This event will teach participants how to...

· get involved in state issues
· and foster collaboration with students from across the state

HUMAN RIGHTS LECTURE ON SIERRA LEONE
The UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights present Eugene Harkins, the author of Where Witch Birds Fly, in a lecture on the human right's crisis in Sierra Leone. Eugene Harkins’ lecture will not only highlight the devastation caused by the civil war in Sierra Leone, but will focus on the sense of hope and the democratic renewal occurring in the country since the civil war. He will also provide updates on the Charles Taylor trial presently before the Hague. This event will take place on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 in CUE 122.

CONNECTICUT POETRY CIRCUIT STUDENTS PRESENT A READING AT THE CO-OP
The University of Connecticut’s Creative Writing Program is pleased to announce that the student poets of the Connecticut Poetry Circuit will be reading at 7:00pm on Tuesday, February 19th, in the UConn Co-op. The winners of the 2007-2008 Student Contest include Tess Bird of the University of Connecticut, Lisa Butler of Manchester Community College, Chiara di Lello of Wesleyan University, Taylor Katz of Connecticut College, and Tyler Theofilos of Yale University.

COMPETE TO PARTICIPATE IN WRITING TUTORIALS WITH POET ANDREW HUDGINS
Poet Andrew Hudgins will spend three days at UConn (February 25, 26, 27) as the Aetna Writer-in-Residence. Ten student writers will be selected to participate in one-on-one writing tutorials with Mr. Hudgins. Students interested in participating should submit a typed 5-page manuscript of poems to Professor Ellen Litman, English Department, CLAS 208. Manuscripts may be several shorter poems or fewer long poems. They should be accompanied by a cover sheet with the student’s name and all contact information. Manuscripts must be received by Friday, February 15, for consideration.
Andrew Hudgins is the author of six volumes of poetry including Saints and Strangers, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Mr. Hudgins will also give a public reading of his poetry on Tuesday, February 26th at 7:30 pm in the Konover Auditorium of the Dodd Center.
