INTERESTED IN BEING A UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR? 
INFORMATION MEETING – MARCH 19

Will you be a junior in Fall 2009? Are you interested in the University Scholar Program? If you are, then you should plan to attend a University Scholar Informational Meeting on Thursday, March 19 from 4:00 to 5:00 PM in Wilson Hall Rm. 124/125. Students will be given an overview the University Scholar Program and its application process, and hear from faculty committee members and current University Scholars. University Scholar information can be found on-line at www.us.uconn.edu. The 2009 application materials will be on-line by July 15.

SCHOLARS DAY – MARCH 23, 2009
Congratulations Babbidge Scholars & New England Scholars!

Congratulations to the Babbidge Scholars and New England Scholars who will be recognized at Scholars Day on March 23!  The event was established to recognize the academic accomplishments of University students from all campuses, who demonstrated academic excellence during the calendar year.  For a listing of the award recipients, award criteria, and ceremony details, visit the Scholars Day web site HERE!

HONORS REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Fall 2009 Registration Begins March 23
Registration for Fall 2009 begins on Monday, March 23.  Students will have access to the registration system beginning on the date listed as their enrollment appointment in PeopleSoft.  Students should also review the Honors registration page HERE for a listing of Honors courses and information regarding priority registration, meeting with your Honors advisor, and more. 

Honors Core Course Requirement
Students who entered Honors at UConn as first-year students in fall 2007 or after are required to earn at least three Honors credits in an approved Honors Core Curriculum course in order to meet the requirements for Sophomore Honors. You need to take this class sometime during your first or second years.  View the Honors course list HERE to see the listing of approved Honors Core courses.  The requirements for Sophomore Honors are located HERE

Honors Participation Requirement
To remain in good standing in the Program, students MUST earn Honors credit in at least one Honors course or conversion during each academic year (exceptions are made for students studying abroad). The Honors Office reviews class enrollments at the end of the spring semester.  If you have not taken any honors work this year, you will be eligible for dismissal from the Program.

The undergraduate career is a time to explore and what better way than through a more enriching experience of an Honors course.  The complete list of Honors classes can be found HERE.  Watch updates over the next few weeks to hear more about featured courses.

Attention: Graduating Seniors 2009
FINAL CALL FOR HONORS GRADUATION FORMS – MARCH 18

All May and August, 2009 candidates for Honors graduation must submit forms by Wednesday, March 18 to be included in the Honors listing for Commencement 2009.  These students (and any December 2009 candidates who have submitted forms) will also be included on the invitation list for the Honors Medals Ceremony on May 3, 2009.  Students who will be graduating this year must act quickly!  Honors graduation forms are available on-line HERE and must be submitted with appropriate signatures.  If you are graduating this year and you have any questions, please e-mail Patricia.Szarek@uconn.edu immediately.

 

Don't forget! OAKLAWN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

Each year, the Honors Program sponsors the Oaklawn Scholarship for as many as four exceptional Honors students. The competition is open to sophomores and juniors who did NOT receive merit financial aid from the University. Recipients of this prestigious scholarship are chosen according to academic excellence, involvement in the Honors community, and leadership values. Students will receive awards of up to $2,000 per year ($1,000 per semester) to be applied directly to the student’s fee bill. The deadline to apply this year is March 31, 2009.

Applications can be found online and returned to the Honors office in CUE 419, or emailed to honors@uconn.edu.


CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

IMUSE 2009 BEIJING SUMMER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Project IMUSE (Initiating Mutual Understanding through Student Exchange) is a nonprofit organization offering undergraduate and graduate students around the United States with a unique fellowship opportunity in China. Fellowship delegates will be provided with full living accommodations in Beijing for two weeks as they participate in a series of group discussions, cultural activities, speaker events, and guided tours that will promote both their understanding of China and of their Chinese peers. All events will be conducted in English and NO knowledge of Chinese is necessary. Please refer to the IMUSE 2009 website for more information!   • ATTENTION SCIENCE & ENGINEERING STUDENTS

There will be a Graduate Fellowships Forum hosted by the School of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the Office of National Scholarships on
Monday, March 30, 2009 in CAST 212 at 4 p.m.

A representative from the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program will be there to talk about the NSFGRFP application process.  We will also talk about the NDSEG, DHS, NASA, NIH, Hertz and other prestigious science and engineering fellowship opportunities.  Undergraduate & graduate students are encouraged to attend.  For more information contact Jill Deans, Director, ONS at jill.deans@uconn.edu.

Are you interested in studying an aspect of the American Presidency?
Here’s an opportunity to deepen your interest while still at UConn!

The Center for the Study of the Presidency's Presidential Fellows Program offers a year-long opportunity to study all aspects of the American Presidency and the public policy-making process. Fellows are expected to attend a fall and spring leadership conference in Washington, DC, participate in two essay contests, and complete an original research project on an aspect of the modern Presidency. Successful Fellows have strong academic credentials, a demonstrated interest in the institution of the Presidency, and an interest in public policy and public service. All academic majors are eligible! UConn may select one student to participate each year. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, March 18, 2009! UCONN NEEDS VOLUNTEERS!

Volunteers are needed for the University of Connecticut Scholarship Banquet “Recognition for Academic Achievement and Leadership”. This enrollment event will bring CT’s most talented admitted students to this program where representatives will meet informally with admitted students and their parents. The Scholarship Reception will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, CT.

Transportation will be provided for all volunteers. You will depart from the Undergraduate Admissions Office at 10 a.m. and return to campus around 4:30 pm. If you are interested in this very important enrollment program, contact Jane Kelley-Sabatino in the Undergraduate Admissions Office at 486-1477 or via email at jane.kelley-sabatino@uconn.edu.

ATTEND THE HONORS COUNCIL FORMAL!

Come and join HC for our 4th annual Honors Formal on Saturday, April 4 from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. at Zenny's Restaurant & Banquet Facility! Enjoy a five course dinner, great music and dancing (with transportation included)! The theme this year is "Under the Sea." Dress attire is required. Shuttle buses will run between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.; pick-up location is the South circle by Wilson Hall. The event is open to all honors program members (non-honors dates welcome). Tickets will not be handed out until paid in full and are needed to board the buses.

Tickets are now on sale for $35 and are be available at:
- The Honors Council Meeting (Wednesdays 7-8 SouthA 124/125)
- Tables in Buckley and South dining halls (Look out for times and dates for this!)
- Floors representatives will be selling tickets from their dorms in Shippee, South, Buckley and Alumni. Look for signs on their doors.
