UPCOMING DEADLINE: Mitchell Scholarship pre-applications DUE March 25, 2008
The prestigious George Mitchell Scholarship supports one-year of postgraduate study in Ireland. Students must be nominated by the Office of National Scholarships to apply for the national competition in October 2008. High achieving students who are U.S. citizens, under 30 years old and have or will have received their undergraduate degrees by May 2009 are eligible. * Congratulations to Leah Brown-Wilusz! *
The Division of Vertebrate Morphology and SICB has named Leah Brown-Wilusz the recipient of the DVM award for best student poster: "Ontogenetic effects of hatching plasticity in spotted salamanders due to larval and egg predators." Leah presented her poster at the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology Conference in San Antonio, TX.
NOMINATIONS FOR FYE INSTRUCTOR AWARDS
The First Year Experience Instructor Award was established in 1999 to honor those who teach in the First Year Experience program. First Year Experience (FYE) classes are designed to support and challenge first year students as they transition to the University of Connecticut. This award provides the Office of First Year Programs a unique opportunity to acknowledge the hard-work and dedication of the faculty and professional staff who teach first year students. The recipients of the FYE Instructor of the Year Award will each receive $500 and be honored at this year's Instructional Excellence Banquet on April 24, 2008. NOMINATIONS FOR JOHN T. SZARLAN MEMORIAL STUDENT MENTOR AWARD
Nominations are also being accepted for the John T. Szarlan Memorial Student Mentor Award. In 2007, the mentor award was established as a memorial to John T. Szarlan. As a counselor at UConn for 13 years , Mr. Szarlan was focused on supporting students' transition to the University. He devoted his time to guiding students and teaching them techniques to effectively study, manage time, and handle the pressures of college. The recipient of the award will each receive $500 and be honored at the Instructional Excellence Banquet on April 24th. UCONN PIRG HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS EVENTS
UConn PIRG Hunger and Homelessness is one of the four campaigns of UConn PIRG, an organization dedicated to fighting hunger and homelessness in Connecticut.
On March 29th, 2008, UConn will participate in the national service day known as Hunger Clean Up, during which students on campuses nationwide engage in community service and raise money to benefit the needy. It will take place at local churches, grocery stores and shelters from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Contact Erin Sippel at erin.sippel@uconn.edu if you are interested in joining the Clean Up! Students must register for this event.
PIRG is also holding “Hungry For Change,” a CT symposium on Hunger and Homelessness. It will be an all day conference held on April 5th, 2008 in the Merlin Bishop Center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.. The conference will be open to students from all over the state and will feature speeches by local lawmakers, a panel on homelessness with homeless speakers, a homelessness role-play, and dozens of workshops by the states leading experts on Hunger and Homelessness. NANOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH FORUM
The UConn School of Engineering will host a Nanotechnology Research Forum
Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
Presentations will be from 1 to 4 p.m. with a reception at 4 p.m.
in the Konover Auditorium of the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center.
The forum will feature 5 minute presentations from researchers in the field of nanotechnology.
