INFORMATION SESSION: FULBRIGHTS AND MORE!

Wednesday, April 16, 12 to 1 p.m. in CUE 134
Undergraduates interested in learning about the Fulbright program, the NSEP Boren Scholarships, the Carnegie Junior Fellows program and other international affairs scholarship opportunities should attend this session. Feel free to bring your lunch. Sodas & cookies provided. Note: seniors apply for Fulbrights and the Carnegie Jr. Fellows in early fall, so don’t miss out. Questions? SOPHOMORE CERTIFICATE DEADLINE FOR CURRENT SOPHOMORES

All current Honors sophomores must submit an application for the Sophomore Certificate by April 15, 2008. The application can be found online. Sophomore Certificate requirements differ for students that entered UConn during the 2007-2008 year or later and those that entered during the 2006-2007 year or earlier. Both sets of requirements can be found here!

 

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2008 GOLDWATER SCHOLAR!

Joseph Fournier, a sophomore Chemistry major. Joe began his collegiate research career the summer before his freshman year in the lab of Dr. V. Kumar where he synthesized inorganic microspheres for possible use in medicine delivery. In the Spring of 2007, he joined Dr. Robert Bohn’s microwave spectroscopy group to research long-range nonbonded attactions. An Eagle Scout, Joe has been dedicated to community service, having volunteered over 900 hours of his time in the past five years to the Scouts, the Red Cross, DARE and a local hospital. In his application, Joe writes, “I am motivated by a desire to one day understand the inner workings of atoms and molecules and to apply this knowledge towards finding causes and cures for disease, creating efficient and clean energy sources, and developing new, advanced materials.”

Michael Abramczyk, a sophomore Physics and Philosophy double major!

The Goldwater Scholarship is a highly competitive and prestigious merit-based scholarship open to undergraduates in the sciences, math and engineering. Sophomore and juniors with research experience and PhD aspiration are encouraged to apply. The University of Connecticut may nominate up to four applicants each year to compete on the national level. Pre-applications for nomination are due October 27, 2008. Interested students should contact Jill Deans in the Office of National Scholarships.

 

HONORS COURSES IN BUSINESS

Students in the School of Business are highly encouraged to enroll in the Honors sections of their courses. Students already enrolled in non-honors sections are advised to switch into these sections. Make your class experience unique and challenging by signing up today!

FOR ALL UNDERGRADUATES – INNOVATION ACCELERATOR FALL 2008

The IA experience is recruiting 14 to 18 bright, creative, motivated students to participate in its internships for Fall 2008. This unique opportunity allows students to work with Connecticut based high-tech entrepreneurial ventures. Students are competitively selected to be members of teams and will get “a unique, in-depth, 360-degree exposure to the venture and its entrepreneurial founders.”  The goal of the IA is to make a significant strategic contribution to the venture’s success – while providing a truly unique and educational experience for the student. While the Innovation Accelerator experience is sponsored by the School of Business, the application process is open to all students! Undergraduate students should be entering their senior year, and the experience can be used as the basis for an honors thesis. The application deadline is April 11, 2008! THE THIRD ANNUAL 2008 JOHN AND VALERIE ROWE LECTURE

"The Answer to Cancer…" presented by Dr. Carolyn D. Runowicz, Director of the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center will take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 7 pm in the Student Union Theatre. This event is free and open to the entire University community.  THIS COUNTS AS AN HONORS EVENT!

Carolyn D. Runowicz, M.D. is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in women's health, specifically gynecologic cancer.  Her research career has been highlighted by developing innovative clinical trials in gynecologic oncology, with more than 200 publications.  She is currently the Director at the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, holds the Northeast Utilities Chair in Experimental Oncology and is Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, CT. The Rowe Lecture is the result of an endowment provided by the President of the Board of Trustees and past CEO of Aetna, Dr. John Rowe, and his wife, Valerie.  The lecture is intended for undergraduate students interested in the health professions.
