ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE HONORS PROGRAM
THE HONORS PROGRAM IS HIRING FOR FALL 2009!
The Honors Program is looking for Honors students with a Work Study award to work in the main office. The position includes but is not limited to: greeting students and visitors, answering phones and taking messages, mailings, assist in maintaining office files, photocopying, mail merges, assist in database maintenance and campus deliveries. Computer skills are required along with willingness to learn. Applicants must be reliable, be a quick learner, and have a pleasant and professional attitude. Must be able to work independently and pay close attention to detail in this high profile office. Knowledge of the Honors Program is helpful, but not required. CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR'S OAKLAWN SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Congratulations to junior Jenn Kalita and sophomore Margaret McCarthy, winners of the 2009 Oaklawn Scholarships. Jenn is pursuing a B.A. in Spanish and Political Science and is thoroughly involved on campus through Peer Allies Through Honors, Honor’s Council, Spanish Club, Undergraduate Student Government, and the Law and Business Society. Margaret is a Political Science and Economics double major and Human Rights minor and has been committed to volunteerism throughout her undergraduate career. She participated in both honors spring break trips to the Gulf Coast, worked on a House of Representatives bill for rebuilding the Gulf Coast and is a member of the Global Leadership Commission and UConn’s Model United Nations.
Each year, the Honors Program sponsors the Oaklawn Scholarship. The competition is open to sophomores and juniors who did NOT receive merit financial aid from the University. Recipients of this prestigious scholarship are chosen according to academic excellence, involvement in the Honors community, and leadership values. FEATURED HONORS COURSE - STAY CURRENT ON THE ENVIRONMENT!
Spaces are still available for this exciting Honors course! NRE 4600: Current Topics in Agriculture and Natural Resources (Class # 13101, 3 credits) will give Honors students the opportunity to stay current with issues in the environment through in-depth discussions with researchers. LIFE SCIENCE HONORS THESIS RESEARCH GRANTS STILL AVAILABLE
Deadline Extended to May 1, 2009. Funding is still available for the Life Sciences Honors Thesis Research Grants. Grants of up to $1000 per student will be provided (or $500 if you were a SURF 2009 recipient). Applications will be accepted through May 1st. Visit the Honors website or the Office of Undergraduate Research website and click on the links for the “Life Sciences Honors Thesis Research Grants" for eligibility and application information.

Required Honors Senior Survey was due April 15, 2009 but we have extended the deadline to May 1st! Please take a few minutes to give feedback on your experiences as an Honors student, and fill us in on your future plans! The survey is located online at:

SENIORS – SUBMIT YOUR THESIS ELECTRONICALLY
It is highly recommended that as Honors graduates you submit your thesis for posting on DigitalCommons@UConn, the University's institutional repository.
Once a hard copy of your thesis has been submitted to the Honors Office with a signed approval form, send a copy of your thesis to honors@uconn.edu as an attachment. Your e-mail should also include: Your name, major, title of your thesis, the name of your thesis advisor, your graduation date, an abstract and 3 to 5 keywords that you feel best describe the subject matter of your thesis! Roger Cohen is a world-renown journalist for both the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune and an expert in the fields of international relations and international politics. His former positions include Deputy Foreign Editor and Acting Foreign Editor for the New York Times and Foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. INTERNATIONAL NITE SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
Are you involved in promoting multiculturalism and diversity on campus? Are you interested in winning a $500 scholarship towards your studies at UConn? On Tuesday, April 21, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre author Paul Loeb will talk about being a student on campus and how to balance school, social life, and activism. He has spoken at hundreds of colleges across the country, written multiple books, and spoke at both Powershift '07 and '09. This event is sponsored by UConnPIRG, Ecohusky, and Community Outreach.

Dr. Daniella Sarnoff, Director, International Dissertation Research Fellowship Program Social Science Research Council (SSRC) New York, NY will discuss fellowship opportunities through the SSRC. Question and Answer period to follow.
Dr. Daniella Sarnoff is Program Director of the International Dissertation Research Fellowship at the Social Science Research Council in New York. Her work focuses on extremist politics in the interwar years and the intersections of culture and politics, especially gender ideology, domesticity and consumption. Her manuscript, Women, Family, and Gender in French Fascism, 1919-1939 is currently under review.
