ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE HONORS PROGRAM


Congratulations to Rachel Madariaga, 2009 recipient of the United States Department of State Critical Language Scholarship! Sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, the Critical Language Scholarships Program was launched in 2006. This full scholarship will sponsor intensive language and cultural immersion in Turkey this summer.

 

THE HONORS PROGRAM IS HIRING FOR FALL 2009!

The Honors Program is looking for Honors students with Work Study awards to work in the main office. The position includes but is not limited to: greeting students and visitors, answering phones and taking messages, mailings, assisting in maintaining office files, photocopying, mail merges, assisting in database maintenance and campus deliveries. Computer skills are required along with willingness to learn. Applicants must be reliable, be quick learners, and have a pleasant and professional attitude. Must be able to work independently and pay close attention to detail in this high profile office. Knowledge of the Honors Program is helpful, but not required. Each year, the Honors Program sponsors the Oaklawn Scholarship. The competition is open to sophomores and juniors who did NOT receive merit financial aid from the University. Recipients of this prestigious scholarship are chosen according to academic excellence, involvement in the Honors community, and leadership values. FEATURED HONORS COURSE - STAY CURRENT ON THE ENVIRONMENT!

Spaces are still available for this exciting Honors course! NRE 4600: Current Topics in Agriculture and Natural Resources (Class # 13101, 3 credits) will give Honors students the opportunity to stay current with issues in the environment through in-depth discussions with researchers. DON'T FORGET! LIFE SCIENCE HONORS THESIS RESEARCH GRANTS STILL AVAILABLE

Deadline Extended to May 1, 2009. Funding is still available for the Life Sciences Honors Thesis Research Grants. Grants of up to $1000 per student will be provided (or $500 if you were a SURF 2009 recipient). Applications will be accepted through May 1st. Visit the Honors website or the Office of Undergraduate Research website and click on the links for the “Life Sciences Honors Thesis Research Grants" for eligibility and application information.

ATTENTION SENIORS! FINAL STEPS TO GRADUATION IN HONORS

SENIORS – SUBMIT YOUR MANDATORY HONORS SENIOR SURVEY
Required Honors Senior Survey was due April 15, 2009 but we have extended the deadline to May 1st! Please take a few minutes to give feedback on your experiences as an Honors student, and fill us in on your future plans! The survey is located online at:
https://secure.uconn.edu/honors/applicationsv2/seniorsurvey/index.php.

SENIORS – SUBMIT YOUR THESIS ELECTRONICALLY
It is highly recommended that as Honors graduates you submit your thesis for posting on DigitalCommons@UConn, the University's institutional repository.

Once a hard copy of your thesis has been submitted to the Honors Office with a signed approval form, send a copy of your thesis to honors@uconn.edu as an attachment. Your e-mail should also include: Your name, major, title of your thesis, the name of your thesis advisor, your graduation date, an abstract and 3 to 5 keywords that you feel best describe the subject matter of your thesis! Click here for more information! (A hardcopy of the Honors thesis must be submitted to the Honors Office with a signed approval form according to posted deadlines.)

The Undergraduate Student Government is hosting International Writer-at-Large Roger Cohen of the New York Times. Roger Cohen is a world-renown journalist for both the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune and an expert in the fields of international relations and international politics. His former positions include Deputy Foreign Editor and Acting Foreign Editor for the New York Times and Foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. THE Q CENTER NEEDS TUTORS!

The Quantitative Learning Center is currently accepting applications for undergraduate tutor positions for Fall 2009! Q Tutors provide peer tutoring in lower-level mathematics, statistics, physics, and chemistry. Tutoring in the Q Center allows tutors to help their peers with homework and exam preparation, sharpen their own quantitative skills, meet new people, and broaden their resumés. Successful applicants will have an aptitude for teaching others one-on-one or in small groups, and a strong background in one or more of the quantitative disciplines (MATH, STATS, Physics, and CHEM), good interpersonal skills, and a desire to help others.
