ATTENTION FRESHMEN & JUNIORS

SAVE THE DATE for the Fall Honors Ceremony on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union. Freshmen will attend the ceremony with their INTD 1784 groups. Juniors, did you earn your Sophmore Honors Certificate? If so, please look for your invitation in your campus mail in mid-September. Forget to apply? Submit late applications to the Honors Program office (CUE 419) by September 8, 2008 to be reviewed for eligibilty.

UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR PROGRAM

Juniors who are interested in creating an individualized plan of study during their last three semesters while engaging in an intensive project should consider applying to the University Scholar Program. Program information, application materials, and a timeline can be found out the updated web site located at www.us.uconn.edu. Students planning to apply for the November 14, 2008 deadline must submit a MANDATORY LETTER OF INTENT by
September 15, 2008.

All first-year Honors students and their families are invited to a buffet breakfast from 8 – 10 a.m. Interested families should R.S.V.P. to honors@uconn.edu by Monday, September 29 with all guests’ names (including the Honors student). Cost to families is $5 per person (first-year Honors student and children 4 and under are free). PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIPS

An information session for seniors will be offered by the Office of National Scholarships on Monday, September 8, 2008 from 4 -5 p.m. in CUE 134. The Goldwater Scholarship for college sophomores and juniors majoring in math, science, and engineering will be the topic of an information session on Monday, September 29, 2008 from 3 - 4 p.m. in CUE 134. NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ETHICS IN AMERICA

APPLY NOW!!! UConn has been invited to send 2 students to the highly prestigious National Conference on Ethics in America October 19-23, 2008 (Sunday - Thursday). Hosted annually at the United States Military Academy at West Point, the NCEA serves to promote awareness among undergraduate students of ethical issues in collegiate communities and professional career fields. Participation -including mentoring by exceptional leaders from a variety of backgrounds - is at NO COST TO YOU. All expenses paid by the conference and transportation costs will be reimbursed by the Honors Program. Interested students should submit a brief statement as to why they are interested in attending by August 30, 2008 to Missy Korduner.

OAXACA, MEXICO for HONORS CREDIT

Professor Mark Overmyer-Velazquez invites Honors students to apply for a Winter Intersession UConn Study Abroad program in Oaxaca and will work with participants who wish to earn Honors credit. Students planning to take the Core Curricululm course on Migrant Workers next spring will be especially interested in this program. Please visit the Study Abroad website to learn more. MONEY FOR THESIS RESEARCH in the LIFE SCIENCES

NEW GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE to support the completion of Honors theses in the life sciences! The Office of the Provost has provided funding to help students with their Honors thesis research for the Academic Year 2008-09. Funding may be used to support lab costs or to purchase consumables. Grants of up to $1000 per student must apply to the execution of research leading to the completion of the Honors thesis in BIO, EEB, MCB, or PNB. THE FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRAD STUDY ABROAD

The Institute of International Education has announced the opening of the 2008 competition for Fulbright Grants for Graduate Study Abroad. Approximately 1000 awards to 140 countries will be available for the 2009-2010 academic year! Graduating seniors, graduate students and students who have recently completed an undergraduate degree, who are US citizens at the time of application, are eligible for Fulbright grants for postgraduate study and/or research abroad. Grants are available to do research or an internship, to do advanced degree work at a university abroad and to teach conversational English in public schools and universities. The deadline for submitting completed applications to the Fulbright Scholarship Committee of the University of Connecticut is 4 p.m. on SEPTEMBER 18, 2008. INTERNATIONAL HONORS PROGRAM

Offering comparative study around the world, the International Honors Program accepts applications for spring programs until October 1. Need-based financial aid is available in the form of grants toward the program fees. One spring offering is: CITIES IN THE 21st CENTURY exploring urban development, planning, politics, and environmental issues in New York, Sao Paulo/Curitiba, Cape Town, and Vietnam. HONORS STUDENT JOURNAL: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Honors Program at the University of Minnesota, Duluth invites submissions in all academic disciplines for Aisthesis, an Honors Student Journal. Research, fiction, poetry, visual art, and photography may be submitted by any undergraduate student working in an honors program or course.
