ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE HONORS PROGRAM

From the Director:
Greetings to all new and continuing Honors students!  It’s hard to believe that in less than one month you will all be on campus starting the fall semester. The Honors staff has been busily working on programs and plans for an exciting 2009-10.  We are especially pleased to be welcoming our largest first-year class ever— 400 new students! And we are equally excited about launching Buckley Hall as our new Honors First-Year Residential Community, a great space with its own dining room, game room and lots of studying space. There have been some additions to our Honors staff over the summer, so check out the bios of our new staff members and make sure to get to know them when you return to campus.  Enjoy the rest of your summers—we can’t wait to see you all back here soon.

Best wishes,
Dr. Goodstein

Fall 2009 Honors Registration Information

There is still time to make adjustments to your Fall 2009 schedule.  You want to make sure that you are optimizing your plan of study and taking advantage of the opportunities available to you as Honors students.  There are still openings in some Honors courses.  Check out the list of Honors courses at http://www.honors.uconn.edu/academics/courselist.php and the featured course list at http://www.honors.uconn.edu/academics/registration.php?p=featuredhonorscourses.  After viewing the Student Administration System for available spaces, you may want to make adjustments to your schedule.

Honors Freshmen:  You should be enrolled in one or two Honors courses in addition to the INTD 1784:  Freshman Honors Seminar.  Students must take at least three credits of approved Honors Core courses as part of the requirements for Sophomore Honors.  A list and descriptions of these courses can be found at http://www.honors.uconn.edu/faculty-staff/corecurriculum/index.php.  Feel free to contact the Honors office or your Honors advisor if you have questions.

Featured Honors Courses:  See a list of featured Honors courses on-line at http://www.honors.uconn.edu/academics/registration.php?p=featuredhonorscourses or consider one of the following course for this semester:

NEW! Honors Core
POLS 2998/WS 3998 – Honors Core: War, Feminism, and International Relations
Does not fulfill GER at this time, but will fulfill Honors Core Course requirement for Sophomore Honors certificate.
3 Credits
Fall 2009

Instructor, Christine Sylvester
Description:  War is a defining characteristic of international relations. Although by some measures war is declining in frequency over time, in the post-World War II era we have seen wars rage in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, Central America, the Pacific Islands, and the Middle East. The field of International Relations (IR) views war as one of its core subjects and tends to study it in terms of state and military security strategies, new and old wars, generations of weaponry, ethics and laws of war, humanitarian coalitions, and war causes. Historically, IR has not studied issues of gender and war at all. Until recently much feminist scholarship, which does consider gender power relations and the positions of women in society, has shown spotty interest in studying war as a feminist topic, because of the violence it entails. A new generation of feminist IR thinking, however, sees no contradiction between feminism and researching war, and has been taking up war studies with energy. Drawing on scholarly resources in IR and feminism, as well as war representations in novels, visual art, and memorials, this course reveals intriguing points of connection that emerge when we consider war from perspectives not often brought together.

SOCI 5501-001 (#10644)
Racism
Tu 3:30 - 6:15
Instructor: Noel Cazenave
This seminar offers students an opportunity to critically examine contemporary theories of racism from a variety of academic disciplines. These theories and their critiques, although largely underdeveloped, provide insights into the organization, dynamics and persistence of racism as a central and enduring phenomenon around which the United States and other modern societies are structured and evolve. Students are encouraged to use the course as a resource in the conceptualization of theses and dissertations in the emerging area of racism studies.
GRADUATE COURSE - AVAILABLE FOR HONORS CREDIT - No Honors conversion form necessary. Students should check with their Honors advisor to see if this course qualifies for the Honors Scholar Plan of Study in their major.

From Campus Life:

U – C – O – N – N !

The University of Connecticut is proud to invite all interested students to try out for its new Spirit Squad!

No formal dance or cheer experience necessary.

Continuing a long tradition of creating Husky Spirit at UConn, the Spirit Squad will promote spirit and pride in the institution among students and fans alike while representing the institution to constituents across the country. The Spirit Squad, one of the newest traditions at UConn, engages the audience, builds community, and leads cheers and activities that support our Huskies.

The UConn Spirit Squad will consist of 24 students (both men and women). All members of the UConn Spirit Squad cheer at home football games and rotate their responsibilities for any road games. The squad splits (but remains interchangeable) for the men’s and women’s basketball home games and may travel to the Big East and NCAA Tournaments. Additionally, all Squad members are eligible for special appearances.

Tryouts will be held Saturday August 15th, and Sunday August 16th at 4PM in the Hugh S. Greer Fieldhouse.  You only need to attend one session.

For more information about tryouts, eligibility requirements, registering for tryouts, and the Spirit Squad in general visit www.spirit.uconn.edu<http://www.spirit.uconn.edu/>!
