HONORS DEADLINES TO REMEMBER!!
SOPHOMORE CERTIFICATE - LAST CHANCE TO APPLY
Any juniors that have not yet submitted the Sophomore Honors Certificate application, please do so as soon as possible. Messages were sent to the huskymail account of all students who submitted the application for the 2007 Sophomore Honors Certificate. If you did not receive this message, then we did not receive an application from you. Only those students approved for the award by September 12 will be included in the Fall Honors Ceremony. Do not delay! We very much want to recognize you!
If you still need to submit, you will find the forms at http://www.honors.uconn.edu/academics/forms.php. Please follow the instructions on the form and check your transcript to verify that all Honors credits are appropriately listed on your transcript. Questions should be directed to Kate Korner or Patty Szarek. Invitations to the Fall Honors Ceremony will be sent to all recipients of the 2007 Sophomore Honors Certificate by the end of September. Save the date of October 22 on your calendar!
UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS LETTER OF INTENT DUE!
UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR LETTERS OF INTENT DUE SEPTEMBER 17, 2007! Students who are interested in applying to the University Scholar program must submit the mandatory “letter of intent” to the Honors office by Monday, September 17. Students who submit letters of intent will be invited to a workshop on Tuesday, September 24 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. to learn more about the process. COURSE CONVERSION FORMS DUE SEPTEMBER 18!
Honors course conversion forms for Fall 2007 are due on September 18! Visit the forms page on the Honors website at http://www.honors.uconn.edu/academics/forms.php to obtain the proper paperwork.
Conversion forms are required for most 299 courses and are NOT required for graduate level courses, any courses listed here, or Honors thesis courses (unless it is an independent study).Graduate courses are often approved on the Honors plan of study by the departmental Honors advisors. “Honors credit” will not show up on student transcript for graduate courses, but students may include these courses on their Honors plan of study when approved by the Honors advisor.

The Honors Program receives 5 copies of the New York Times delivered daily, Monday through Friday. These copies are available in CUE 419 for students who are not living in Honors housing. The papers will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis each day.

Talk one-on-one with the world renowned novelist Naeem Murr!
Just ten student writers will be chosen to take part in ONE-ON-ONE writing sessions with the internationally recognized novelist and Aetna Writer-in-Residence Naeem Murr. Sponsored by the Aetna Chair in Writing, UConn’s Creative Writing Program invites a well known author to campus once each semester. Just a few past Writers-in-Residence include Edmund White, Fay Weldon and Allen Kurzweil.
To apply for this unique opportunity, submit a short story, nonfiction essay, or novel excerpt (no more than 10 pages!) to Professor Pelizzon of the English Department in CLAS 208. Writing samples should be typed, double spaced, paginated and accompanied by a cover sheet with contact information. DEADLINE IS THIS FRIDAY, September 14!
Naeem Murr is the author of three novels. The Boy was named New York Times Notable Book and his most recent, The Perfect Man was awarded the 2007 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for the Best Book of Europe and South Asia and was long listed for the 2006 Booker Prize.
INFO SESSION FOR INDIVIDUALIZED MAJORS!
ARE YOU A SENIOR WRITING A THESIS AS YOUR CAPSTONE REQUIREMENT? ARE YOU A SOPHOMORE OR JUNIOR PLANNING TO WRITE A THESIS?
The Individualized Major Program is planning a gathering of all Individualized Majors who are writing a thesis this academic year or planning to write a thesis in the future. It will be held on MONDAY, SEPT. 17, 5-6 PM, CUE 134. Pizza will be served.
This will be an opportunity to meet other thesis writers, share your plans for your project and learn about resources that are available. It is a time to ask questions. If you are a sophomore or junior in Honors or planning to apply to Honors, we strongly urge you to attend this forum. HONORS STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES!
Honors in Cape Town, South Africa Info Session: Wednesday, September 12 at 5 pm in CUE 134
Spend spring semester in South Africa and learn about the culture and people of Cape Town. While studying in South Africa, you'll take classes at the University of Cape Town and participate in an internship with local agencies in the area. Learn about the program, the application process, and hear personal accounts from some of the students that just returned from South Africa this summer. This program is an experience of a lifetime, don't miss this opportunity to learn all about it!

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING WITH KIDS?
Do you like working with kids? Do you love to read? Come volunteer in an after-school reading program for elementary students who love to read... Help classroom teachers in local schools work with kids to enjoy and improve their reading!
We are looking for volunteers on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Thursday afternoons for about an hour and a half each visit, starting in mid-September and finishing in late November or early December. The schools start the program at different times, with the earliest start time at about 3:00 and the latest at 4:00, so we have some flexibility in scheduling! We will provide training on the specific program activities before you begin. Please contact Catherine Little (catherine.little@uconn.edu) if you think you might be interested in volunteering.
Rethinking the Latin@ Intellectual Ecology
Puerto Rican Latin@ Studies Institute will hold its annual conference to discuss and discover the differing sites that currently define Latin@ Studies. This event will feature established artists, scholars and activists in the Latin@ studies community, including several professors from inside and outside Connecticut as well as the performance artist Guillermo Gómez Peña. All students are welcome to join the discussion that will include issues of race, gender, class, national origin or ancestry, language identity, and sexual orientation.
