UCONN LAW SCHOOL ALUM WILL PRESENT FOR UCONN STUDENTS
Dona Young, a UConn Law School alum will speak to the UConn students about her succes in business, her family, and serving the community. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session. The presentation will take place TODAY, September 18, from 6 to 7 pm in BSP (Biology-Physics) 130. Light refreshments will be served. This event is open to the public.
Young is currently the President and CEO of Phoenix Companies Inc. and serves on the boards of Foot Locker, Wachovia Corp and American Council of Life Insurers. She is the recipient of many impressive awards, including the Leadership Award for Women in Business, the Antoinette Bascetta Women's Career Development Award, the 2002 Distinguished Graduate Award from the UConn Law School, and the Human Relations Award of the National Conference for Community and Justice.
GET INVOLVED WITH A NEW COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM!
The HDFS department and Community Outreach have teamed up to start a new branch of Jumpstart at UConn. The Jumpstart program teams up preschool aged children with college students to improve school readiness skills. This provides the preschool youth with the necessary one-on-one attention to inspire learning! Make a difference in someone's life by joining the 3,100 volunteers working in 64 communities across 19 states!
UConn Jumpstart is seeking enthusiastic students to get involved in this new and growing program! These are volunteer positions; however work study is available for those who qualify. For more information and to apply visit the UConn Jumpstart website.

The Honors Program receives 5 copies of the New York Times delivered daily, Monday through Friday. These copies are available in CUE 419 for students who are not living in Honors housing. The papers will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis each day.

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING WITH KIDS?
Do you like working with kids? Do you love to read? Come volunteer in an after-school reading program for elementary students who love to read... Help classroom teachers in local schools work with kids to enjoy and improve their reading!
We are looking for volunteers on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Thursday afternoons for about an hour and a half each visit, starting in mid-September and finishing in late November or early December. The schools start the program at different times, with the earliest start time at about 3:00 and the latest at 4:00, so we have some flexibility in scheduling! We will provide training on the specific program activities before you begin. Please contact Catherine Little (catherine.little@uconn.edu) if you think you might be interested in volunteering.
Rethinking the Latin@ Intellectual Ecology
Puerto Rican Latin@ Studies Institute will hold its annual conference to discuss and discover the differing sites that currently define Latin@ Studies. This event will feature established artists, scholars and activists in the Latin@ studies community, including several professors from inside and outside Connecticut as well as the performance artist Guillermo Gómez Peña. All students are welcome to join the discussion that will include issues of race, gender, class, national origin or ancestry, language identity, and sexual orientation.
