Updates in Honors September 4, 2007
WELCOME BACK !


Sophomore Certificate - LAST CHANCE TO APPLY!

If you have not submitted your Sophomore Honors Certificate application, please do so as soon as possible. Messages were sent to the huskymail account of all students who submitted the application for the 2007 Sophomore Honors Certificate. If you did not receive this message, then we did not receive an application from you. Only those students approved for the award by September 12 will be included in the Fall Honors Ceremony. Do not delay! We very much want to recognize you!

If you still need to submit, you will find the forms at http://www.honors.uconn.edu/academics/forms.php. Please follow the instructions on the form and check your transcript to verify that all Honors credits are appropriately listed on your transcript. Questions should be directed to Kate Korner or Patty Szarek. Invitations to the Fall Honors Ceremony will be sent to all recipients of the 2007 Sophomore Honors Certificate by the end of September. Save the date of October 22 on your calendar!

WEST POINT INVITES YOU!

To the ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ETHICS IN AMERICA

The Honors Program is looking for 2 juniors (or highly qualified sophomores) interested in attending the annual NCEA at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. This year’s theme is “Providing the Nation with Citizens of Character.” Students and experienced facilitators from a spectrum of professional backgrounds will discuss if and how the process of education should incorporate the personal development of character. Any students that are interested should stop by the Honors Program with a letter of interest by September 24th!

Rethinking the Latin@ Intellectual Ecology

Puerto Rican Latin@ Studies Institute will hold its annual conference to discuss and discover the differing sites that currently define Latin@ Studies. This event will feature established artists, scholars and activists in the Latin@ studies community, including several professors from inside and outside Connecticut, as well as the performance artist Guillermo Gómez Peña. All students are welcome to join the discussion that will include issues of race, gender, class, national origin or ancestry, language identity, and sexual orientation.

Law School Forums

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) has brought together a series of forums for students interested in applying to law school. These workshops are designed to help students gain information on…
*How to choose the Law School that best suits you
*How to finance Law School
*How to study for the LSAT
Get your questions answered one on one by those who know!

The closest forum will be held on Saturday October 6th in Boston, MA—a great supplement to UConn’s own Law School Fair! Attention Juniors!

The Institute for Responsible Citizens is seeking male, minority students of strong integrity and demonstrated ability who are interested in careers in law, public service, education, journalism, business and the ministry to apply for this prestigious program. Each year, the Institute invites its chosen students to Washington for two summers of academics, internships and mentoring. This program is incredibly competitive!

NEW HONORS COURSES!

MEET YOUR GEN ED REQUIREMENTS AND EARN HONORS CREDIT WITH THIS COURSE!
Explore the “game theory”—a method of studying people’s strategic behavior—in the Honors course ECON 108: Game theory in the Natural and Social Sciences. The game theory applies to many different disciplines including politics, evolutionary biology, and the social sciences. This course fulfills a Content Area 2 requirement! Meets at 3:30-4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Class Number 1512)

NEW THIS WEEK!

MCB 291: Intro to Science Careers will explore the many possibilities of a successful career in the sciences through an informal seminar setting. Learn about career options other than med-school and the current job opportunities that the science community has to offer. Meets Tuesdays from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. To obtain a permission number, email lisa.dejesse@uconn.edu. Sign up soon because the first mandatory class is on Tuesday, September 11th! Don't forget that the last day to add or drop via Peoplesoft is Monday, September 10th!

UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR LETTERS OF INTENT DUE SEPTEMBER 17, 2007

Students who are interested in applying to the University Scholar program must submit the mandatory “letter of intent” to the Honors office by Monday, September 17.  Students who submit letters of intent will be invited to a workshop on Tuesday, September 24 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. to learn more about the process.  More information about the letter of intent can be found at http://universityscholars.uconn.edu/info.php?p=letter on the University Scholar web site www.us.uconn.edu.

CARNEGIE JUNIOR FELLOWS PROGRAM
Monday, September 10, 4 p.m. in CUE 133
Spend one postgrad year working at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in one of several subject fields including: Democracy and the Rule of Law; the Middle East China; Nonproliferation, Trade Equity and Development; and more. Very esteemed! (Seniors will apply for the 2008 competition, but students from all classes are encouraged to learn about this program as early as possible to ensure strong application!)

THE BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP
Tuesday, October 2, 5 p.m. in CUE 134
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awards scholarships to high-achieving undergraduate math, science and engineering students. Students apply in their sophomore & junior years. Come learn about process and how you can be competitive.

HARRY S. TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIPS
Tuesday, October 9 at 3 p.m. in CUE 134
These scholarships for graduate study are awarded to college juniors with leadership potential and commitment to career in government or other realms of public service. Frederick Slabach, Executive Secretary for the Truman foundation will be on hand to provide guidance and answer questions!

THE UDALL SCHOLARSHIP
Monday, October 15, 2007 4 p.m., CUE 134
$5,000 scholarships for undergraduates who intend to pursue careers related to the environment, or who are Native American and intend to pursue careers in Native American health care or tribal policy.  Students can apply in their sophomore or junior year.  Pre-applications are due Nov. 1, 2007.

Honors students are invited to attend the BIG 10+ GRADUATE SCHOOL EXPOSITION

Use this incredible opportunity to help you in the process of choosing, applying, and getting into a prestigious graduate program! The expo will provide students with extensive information on graduate studies in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Agriculture, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine. The Big 10+ Graduate School Expo will take place on September 23 and 24, 2007 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Students may apply for travel scholarships to attend the Grad School Expo; the application deadline for priority consideration is THIS FRIDAY, September 7, 2007 (Students may still apply after this date but will be considered based on funding availability).

CELEBRATE CONSTITUTION DAY WITH UCONN'S DISTINGUISHED GUEST SPEAKER

When?    Monday, September 17at 4 p.m.

Where?   Konover Auditorium

Stop by to hear Professor Amar of Yale University discuss the American constitution, with emphasis such issues as slavery, suffrage, and states’ rights. Amar will focus on the contributions of the generations following the founding fathers.

Dr. Akhil Amar is the Southmayd Professor of Law and Politic Science at Yale University. After graduating Yale College and Law School, Professor Amar served as a clerk for a judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals, 1st circuit. He is the author of several books including his most recent, America’s Constitution: A Biography and the co-editor of a leading constitutional law casebook titled Processes of Constitutional Decisionmaking.
