CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ETHICS IN AMERICA-APPLY NOW!

The National Conference on Ethics in America is October 18-22, 2009 (Sunday-Thursday).  UCONN has been invited to send TWO students to this very prestigious conference.  The NCEA is an annual event hosted by the United States Military Academy at West Point.  Presented through the generosity of the West Point Class of 1970, NCEA serves to promote awareness among undergraduate students of ethical issues in collegiate communities and professional career fields. Each year, over 150 students representing more than 60 academic institutions from across the country participate in the conference. These outstanding young men and women work with exceptional mentors from a variety of backgrounds to discuss moral and ethical challenges that we as a society face in all facets of day to day life. The goal is to challenge the delegates to think critically about relevant topics and to facilitate a dialogue that lays the groundwork for the delegates to build upon as they bring their ideas back to their colleges and universities.

For more information on the conference, visit:  http://www.usma.edu/uscc/scpme/ncea/index.html.  PARTICIPATION IS AT NO COST TO YOU!!!  All expenses are paid for by the conference and the Honors Program will cover transportation costs.  Interested students should submit a brief statement as to why they are interested in attending to rebecca.gates@uconn.edu by September 22, 2009.

International Human Rights Exchange (IHRE) Johannesburg, South Africa

The International Human Rights Exchange (IHRE) is the world's only full-semester, multidisciplinary program in human rights.  The program is housed at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa and is a joint venture with Bard College.  Each year -- starting in July and ending in November -- students and faculty from North America and Africa come together to participate in a deep and multifaceted intellectual engagement in human rights.  In addition to a required core course, students choose from 12 or more electives exploring human rights from the perspective of a variety of academic disciplines.
IHRE also opens up possibilities for substantive participation in human rights work.  Students enrolled in the Engagement with Human Rights course intern with an NGO working on contemporary rights in post-apartheid South Africa.  Students also explore human rights challenges in rural South Africa through a Community Human Rights Workshop, visit the Apartheid Museum and other relevant sites, and attend guest lectures from human rights experts from South Africa and around the world.
Application Deadline = March 1, 2010
