Student Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Specialist Application 2026-27

The Student Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Specialists will develop, coordinate, and facilitate DEI-related trainings, focus groups, workshops and programming in collaboration with professional staff. Students in this position will serve as members of a staff/faculty advisory committee to establish and implement inclusive priorities, practices, and programming within the Honors Program. The Student Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Specialists will provide administrative and programmatic support in various capacities in support of Honors Program events and initiatives related to diversity, inclusion and global learning.  

Students in this position will be expected to work approximately 7 hours per week, dependent on programming and department needs. Virtual work is possible when team and programming needs allow.

Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Develop, plan, coordinate, and implement programming and initiatives that will further the mission and goals of the Honors Program relating to diversity, inclusion and global learning, in collaboration with professional staff members  
  • Serve as integral members of a staff/faculty advisory committee, providing strategic input and a student voice in establishing inclusive priorities, practices and programming within the Honors Program  
  • Serve as a facilitator and resource for various programs, trainings, and discussions, with a priority on maintaining a safe and inclusive space for students  
  • Assist in the training of Honors peer educators and student leaders on DEI-related topics, through creation and delivery of presentations, workshops, and dialogue facilitation.   
  • Partner with university departments, cultural centers, and student organizations to support programming efforts and promote collaboration  
  • Manage logistics of assigned events and programming, including marketing, communication with faculty/staff and confirming reservations, arrangements, facilitation needs, event details, set-up/take-down and on-site troubleshooting as needed  
  • Attend Student Diversity & Inclusion Specialist team meetings, one-on-one meetings with supervisor, staff/faculty advisory committee meetings, and related trainings, as required  
  • Practice and model strong self-care, while communicating clearly with supervisor and the staff/faculty advisory committee on capacity and what is needed to be successful in this role  

  

  All Honors Program student employees are expected to:  

  • Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality, reliability and integrity  
  • Assist in the development and distribution of program publicity, materials, programs for events and posting flyers on campus  
  • Completing administrative tasks as needed, including answering phones, directing calls, taking messages, greeting visitors and other office responsibilities  
  • Running business errands around campus as needed  
  • Maintaining privacy of sensitive information at all times  
  • Complete other duties and tasks, as assigned  

  

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Must be a full-time undergraduate University of Connecticut Honors student in good standing with the Honors Program  
  • Demonstrates a commitment to actively creating an inclusive environment in the Honors community, university, and surrounding communities   
  • Evidence of engagement with the Honors and/or campus community   
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, and administrators  
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work well independently  
  • Strong communication (oral and written), critical thinking, and reflective skills  
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, contribute ideas, and provide leadership among peers   
  • Demonstrated adaptability, particularly the ability to perform job responsibilities across a range of platforms and environments (for example, virtual or in-person)  
  • Ability to work up to 7 hours per week, dependent on programming and department needs  

 

 Preferred Qualifications  

  • Prior experience in social justice or equity & inclusion work strongly preferred (ex. demonstrated engagement through activism, campus leadership, education retreats, or coursework)  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or experience with event/program planning and coordination and/or group facilitation preferred  
  • At least two full semesters remaining in undergraduate career preferred  

Pay and Benefits  

  • This position is paid $18.34 per hour for up to 7 hours per week
