2014 Honors Core Course Grant Competition: Honors courses with general education content area designations

As a rule, UConn courses with general education content area designations should not be restricted in enrollment. To balance this principle of course openness with the Honors Program purpose of providing accelerated and challenging learning opportunities to high achieving students, Honors courses that currently have or will be seeking general education content area designations should fall into one of the following three categories:

  • Alternating model: The course will alternate between an Honors and non-Honors version on either a semester or yearly basis. The Honors version may be listed with a 100% honors reserve capacity.
  • Same semester model: The Honors and non-Honors versions of the course will be offered in the same semester. The Honors version may be a separate course or an Honors component (e.g., discussion or lab section) of a larger course. The Honors version may be listed with a 100% honors reserve capacity.
  • Stand-alone model: When the course is designed explicitly to encompass accelerated content and/or Honors-level course expectations, it may be entered into the catalog as an Honors course. “Honors” will be included in the course title and/or catalog description. All students enrolled in the course will be held to the same Honors standards, and the course may be listed with a 50% honors reserve capacity.
