Michael Cunningham

Assistant Director, Office of National Scholarships & Fellowships

I became the Assistant Director of ONSF in the summer of 2023. My educational background is interdisciplinary; I studied mechanical engineering as an undergraduate at Lehigh University (BSME 1986) and then history as a doctoral student at UConn (PhD 2005). My graduate work focused on the history of science in Europe from the Scientific Revolution through the Darwinian Revolution.

Between my undergraduate and graduate studies, I served as an account manager for the Loss Control and Engineering unit at the Travelers Insurance company. Then, as a graduate student and adjunct professor, I taught History of Science and European history at UConn and several other colleges in Connecticut. I joined Enrichment Programs as an academic advisor for the Individualized Major program in 2013 and have served on the Fulbright committee for the last five years. When I am not helping students with applications to national scholarships I enjoy reading – especially books about big picture history – and watching baseball.

I specialize in the Fulbright, Goldwater, Critical Language, and Boren scholarships, and provide support for the Gilman scholarship.
