Important: This page is for students who entered UConn in Fall 2018 or later and are seeking the University Honors Laureate award.
This page includes the instructions for completing and submitting each part of the Leadership Experience requirement for University Honors Laureate. More information about the Leadership Experience is available.
Before you begin:
- You can begin the Leadership Experience at any time after the first semester of your first year.
- Your Honors GPS team is your best resource for all Leadership Experience questions.
- Your entire Leadership Experience will be contained in a single Portfolium project that you will submit to multiple requirements as you progress. We hope that this will make a strong addition to your ePortfolio!
- Submitting your project to different requirements will create "snapshot" projects in your portfolio. This is expected--your main project will be where you continue working!
The Leadership Experience consists of three phases. Each of these phases is represented by a milestone in a Portfolium Pathway.
Phase I: Preparation and Planning
There are two requirements within this milestone: attend a leadership workshop and complete a leadership action plan. As part of completing your leadership action plan, you will have your first coaching meeting with an Honors GPS.
Requirement 1: Attend Leadership Workshop
Within 1-2 business days of attending the Leadership Workshop, you will receive an email from the Honors GPS team. This email will a include graphic certificate of completion.
Sign in to Portfolium and click the tasks icon in the top menu. Click the box showing the University Honors Laureate: Leadership Pathway.
Go to the first milestone ("Phase 1: Preparation and Planning") and the first requirement ("Attend Leadership Workshop"). Click the gray Get started box.
On the following page, click the blue Start Requirement box.
The project you start here will eventually contain your entire Leadership Experience.
- Change the title to reflect your planned project. (You'll be able to change it again later if you need to.)
- Click the Upload files link to upload the image that the GPS team sent to you.
- Submit the project for review by an Honors GPS.
The Honors GPS will check your project and confirm your attendance at the Leadership Workshop; they will then enroll you into another pathway to complete the next requirement.
Requirement 2: Complete Leadership Action Plan
The Leadership Action Plan is contained in a separate smaller Portfolium pathway. You will be enrolled in this pathway after completing the Workshop requirement. Once you are enrolled, look for the University Honors Laureate: Leadership Action Plan pathway under tasks.
This pathway has three requirements: (a) submitting a first draft plan, (b) submitting a pre-coaching draft plan, and (c) submitting a finalized plan. As part of this pathway, you will be assigned an Honors GPS coach and meet with them for the first time.
(a) Submit first draft plan
The first requirement in the Leadership Action Plan pathway is to complete and submit a draft Leadership Action Plan. Use the Google Slides template link located in the milestone and requirement instructions on Portfolium, and complete the draft to the best of your ability.
Go to Portfolium and edit the project you started for your Leadership Workshop requirement.
Can't find your project? Search for "Leadership Development" under skills.
Use the More options link to connect your Google Drive and attach your Leadership Action Plan. Make any other changes you would like, then save the project.
Go back to the Leadership Action Plan pathway and go to the first requirement ("Submit draft plan"). Click the gray “Get started” box. This time, click the blue “start with an existing project” link on the following page.
Search for the project that you just edited.
Select the project and then follow the prompts to include all project content and copy it to this requirement.
You'll use the "Start with existing project" link for all remaining Leadership requirements. This process creates a snapshot copy of your Leadership Experience project with the name of the requirement as the project title. You can ignore these snapshots. Make sure you always edit your main Leadership Experience project. Having a clear title on that project will help you keep track of it.
If you make a mistake and end up starting with a blank project, that's OK! Add only the files needed for that specific requirement, and put the link to your full Leadership Experience project in the description. (Find the link to a project by clicking its SHARE icon.)
Click the blue submit requirement button.
After you submit your draft plan, three things will occur:
- You will receive an email telling you who your Honors GPS coach is. Go to your Leadership Experience project and tag your Honors GPS coach as your teammate.
- Your Honors GPS coach will connect with you on Portfolium. You should accept their connection request when it arrives.
- Your Honors GPS coach will evaluate your draft plan against the rubric and give you feedback. Make sure you view the full rubric to benefit from their feedback.
Use the feedback from your Honors GPS coach to continue to improve your Leadership Action Plan. (Remember to make changes in Google Slides, come back to Portfolium, and then remove and re-add the Leadership Action Plan within the Leadership Experience project.)
Send a message in Portfolium to let your coach know when you've made changes.
They will give you additional feedback via comments on your project. Continue collaborating until you and your Honors GPS coach agree that your plan is ready for the next submission.
Each time your coach evaluates and sends back your LAP with feedback, you will have 2 weeks to make edits and resubmit. If you are unable to make revisions within this deadline, reach out to your coach to discuss an extension or pause in your project.
(b) Submit pre-coaching draft plan
Once you and your Honors GPS coach agree that your Leadership Action Plan is ready for submission, submit your Leadership Experience project to the second requirement of the University Honors Laureate: Leadership Action Plan pathway.
Your Honors GPS coach will review your pre-coaching draft plan and give you additional feedback. They will also send you instructions on setting up your first Honors GPS coaching meeting.
(c) Submit finalized plan
After you have met with your Honors GPS coach, use their feedback to finalize your Leadership Action Plan. You may also continue to collaborate with them in Portfolium. Once your plan is finalized, submit your Leadership Experience project to the third requirement of the University Honors Laureate: Leadership Action Plan pathway.
Your Honors GPS coach will review your finalized plan. Once it is approved, you will have completed the Leadership Action Plan pathway and Requirement 2 of the main Leadership pathway
Congratulations! You have completed the first phase (pathway milestone) of the Leadership Experience!
Phase II: Action
The second phase of the Leadership Experience consists of enacting your Leadership Action Plan.
- Continue to document your work in your Portfolium Leadership Experience project. This is your portfolio; showcase your work whatever way you think best! (But keep privacy, confidentiality, and ethics in mind.)
- Keep your Honors GPS coach tagged in your project, and message them whenever you need assistance or have any questions.
- If you need to modify any portion of your Leadership Action Plan, message your Honors GPS coach. They will email you the template and instructions for revisions.
Requirement 3: Leadership Experience Project
Once you have completed your project, submit your existing Leadership Experience project to the only requirement under Phase II of the University Honors Laureate: Leadership pathway.
Congratulations! After your Honors GPS coach checks off the completion of your Leadership Experience Project, you will have completed the second phase (pathway milestone) of the Leadership Experience!
You will be enrolled in another pathway for Phase III.
Phase III: Reflection
There is one requirement within this milestone: complete a leadership reflection. You'll complete another coaching meeting with your Honors GPS coach as part of this process.
Requirement 4: Complete Leadership Reflection
When an Honors GPS has finished reviewing your Leadership Experience Project (Requirement 4), they will enroll you in a separate University Honors Laureate: Leadership Reflection pathway.
This pathway has two requirements: (a) submitting a pre-coaching reflection and (b) submitting a finalized reflection.
(a) Submit pre-coaching reflection
Use the Google Slides template link located in the milestone and requirement instructions in Portfolium. Complete your reflection, add it to your Leadership Experience project, and submit it to the first requirement in the University Honors Laureate: Leadership Reflection pathway.
Your Honors GPS coach will review your reflection and provide additional feedback. Once they approve it, they will also send you instructions on setting up your final Honors GPS coaching meeting.
(b) Submit finalized reflection
After you have met with your Honors GPS coach, use their feedback to make any necessary revisions to your Leadership Reflection. Submit your Leadership Experience project to the second requirement in the University Honors Laureate: Leadership Reflection pathway.
Your Honors GPS coach will again review your reflection and provide additional feedback.
Congratulations! Once your coach approves your reflection, you will have completed the University Honors Laureate Leadership Experience. You will receive the Leadership badge, which will be displayed in your Portfolium profile.
