A note about terminology:
The Honors Conversion Agreement is the form that establishes the Honors conversion by a specific student in a specific course. Both the student and the instructor approve the agreement.
The Conversion Plan is the part of the Honors Conversion Agreement that details the work that will be done for the conversion. Honors Conversion Agreements for independent study and independent research courses are the only ones that do not contain Conversion Plans.
Optional: Create an Honors Conversion Plan
New for Fall 2026!
Many instructors plan potential Honors Conversions in advance for one or more courses. You can now file a Conversion Plan for a given course in a given semester. Students will then have the ability to import that plan into an Honors Conversion Agreement.
Important: Honors Conversion Plans are not private. Anyone who can sign in to Kuali can read any plan or import it into an Honors Conversion Agreement.
To start, open the Honors Conversion Plan app on Kuali Build.
This will create a new document, which you can access later by opening Kuali Build and looking in the My Documents section.
If you need additional information about the fields on this form, review the information on Conversion Plans.
Students will be able to edit this information in their Honors Conversion Agreement, so you can include instructions for students to select among multiple options, fill in topics of interest, or other changes.
When you have completed the form, click Submit. The plan is immediately available to students.
Please complete only one Conversion Plan for a given course number in a given semester. Students will search for the course and be shown a list of instructors, so having more than one matching plan will be confusing. If you want to provide more than one option or choice in conversions, include all options in the same Conversion Plan.
Duplicating a Conversion Plan to another course or semester
There are several reasons why you may want to copy a conversion plan. You may be teaching a course that is cross-listed across multiple subject codes or with both W and non-W variants. You may also wish to reuse a conversion plan from a previous semester, with or without changes.
- Go to the My Documents section of Kuali Build and locate the Honors Conversion Plan you wish to duplicate.
- Open the document and then click the Duplicate button at the top right. This will create a new document containing the same information.
- To change the semester, click the "X" next to the semester value. It will be replaced with the semester dropdown.
- If you change the subject code, you will need to select the course from the relevant menu. This is true even if the course number will not change.
- When you have completed your edits, click the Submit button.
You should now see both Honors Conversion Plans under My Documents.
Modifying a submitted Conversion Plan
Editing a Conversion Plan does not affect any Honors Conversion Agreements into which the plan has already been imported. This means there is no need to modify a plan for a previous semester.
- Open the Document List for the Honors Conversion Plans app. You will see all Conversion Plans from all instructors, but you only have the ability to edit your own.
You cannot change submitted plans from your My Documents list. - Find the relevant document and click to open it.
- Click the Edit button to shift out of read-only mode.
- After making any needed changes, click the Apply Edits button.
There is no mechanism for instructors to delete a submitted Conversion Plan. If you need a Conversion Plan deleted, please email the details to honors@uconn.edu.
Approve an Honors Conversion Agreement
When a student submits an Honors Conversion Agreement listing you as the instructor, you will receive an email requesting your approval.
- To open the agreement, click the link within the email or find the document within your Kuali Build Action List.
- Please take time to check the student's enrollment information (subject, course number, and section). This is particularly important if your course is offered under multiple subjects, has a W variant, or multiple course components, such as discussion or laboratory sections.
- You can make changes to this information without returning the agreement for revision.
- If you change the subject code, you will need to select the course from the relevant menu even if the course number was correct.
- After making changes, click the Save button at the top right.
- Carefully review the Conversion Plan section.
If you need additional information about the fields in this section, see the page about Conversion Plans.Did you create a conversion plan in advance? Remember that students are able to edit this section even after importing a plan, so you should review to ensure that any changes made are acceptable.
- In the Instructor Agreement section, click the arrow to the right of the heading corresponding to the action you wish to take. Follow the instructions given to approve, deny, or send the agreement back for revision.
The Instructor Agreement section includes important information about what messages will be sent to the student, so please do not skip step 4!
Independent Study and Independent Research courses
If the student indicates that the class is an independent study or independent research course, the agreement will not contain a Conversion Plan section. Instead, an approved Honors Conversion Agreement will indicate that the entire independent experience is at an Honors level.
Because there is no separate conversion work, the student will not need to confirm its completion. Instead, you will be assigned the "Instructor Review (Independent Study)" step immediately after approving the Honors Conversion Agreement. You should not complete this step until the end of the semester.
Viewing an Honors Conversion Agreement
Once you have approved a conversion, it will disappear from your Action List. Instead, open the Document List for the Honors Conversion Agreements app. From this list, you can open (but not change) any Honors Conversion Agreement in which you are listed as the instructor.
Final Review for Honors Credit
The final step before an Honors Conversion Agreement is complete is for you to approve or deny the awarding of Honors credit. Please complete this step by the university's final grade deadline to facilitate the timely posting of Honors credit. Late approvals require manual processing.
At the end of the semester, the student should confirm that they have submitted their conversion work to you. You will then receive an email asking you to confirm whether the student should be awarded Honors credit. Click the link within the email or open the document from your Kuali Build Action List.
Independent study or independent research course? The student is not required to confirm the submission of their work. Open the document from your Action List, or click the link in the email you received way back at the beginning of the semester.
If needed, scroll down to the Instructor Final Review section. Click the arrow next to the heading indicating the student's grade in the course. If they have earned a B- or better in the course, proceed to click the arrow for the subheading indicating the student's performance on their conversion work. Follow the instructions given to approve or deny Honors credit or to indicate that the student has received an extension.
The Instructor Final Review section includes important information about the awarding of Honors credit and what messages a student will receive. Please review it before approving or denying credit!
