Anurag Ojha was born in Biratnagar, Nepal but moved to West Hartford, CT when he was eight. A graduate of Conard High School, Anurag’s interests are science and soccer and he plans to major in biomedical engineering. Throughout his high school career he participated in JumpStart, Junior Doctor’s Academy, the High School Research Apprentice Program, and the Pre-College Enrichment Program, all offered by UConn’s Health Career Opportunity Programs (HCOP). During the High School Research Apprentice Program, Anurag conducted research on the role of the Nectin-Afadin complex in the early parietal endoderm cells in mice in the James Mulrooney Laboratory at Central Connecticut State University.

2013 Rowe Scholar: Nikhil Mistry
Nikhil Mistry was born in Miami, FL but has lived in Trumbull, CT since the seventh grade. As a graduate of Trumbull High School, Nikhil spent his time learning about the health field and competing with Trumbull’s We the People team, which ranks eighth in the nation. He participated in the Mini-Medical/Dental Program at the UConn Health Center, which allowed him to attend lectures about the various branches of medicine and dentistry. A biology major who plans to become a dentist, he has shadowed multiple dentists and has participated in a high school research program called Discovery to Cure, at Yale University.
2013 Rowe Scholar: Christina Jiang
Originally from New York, NY, Christina Jiang was raised in Hamden, CT where she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy as her class’s valedictorian. While a high school student, Christina was a regular participant in Connecticut science fairs and school mission trips. The importance of community service is one of the reasons why she’s entering UConn as a molecular and cell biology major with an interest in pre-med and nutritional sciences. The other catalyst in Christina’s career decision-making was her membership in Healthy Adventures at Yale-New Haven Hospital, which allowed her to tour the hospital and learn about different branches of the medical field.
2013 Rowe Scholar: Jesus Bueno
Jesus Bueno was born in Peru and graduated from Glastonbury High School. His areas of interest lie in biology and medicine, which he was exposed to as a four year participant in UConn’s Health Career Opportunity Programs (HCOP). Being an HCOP student provided him with medical and dental student mentors, the opportunity to visit the UConn Health Center, and the chance to learn how to take blood pressure and perform suturing techniques. In his free time he enjoys ballroom dancing.
2012 Rowe Scholar: Elizabeth Zyzo
Elizabeth Zyzo graduated from Pomperaug High School in her hometown of Southbury, Connecticut. She has a double major in Communication Disorders and Psychology, with an interest in speech pathology. Elizabeth has participated in several of UCHC’s Health Career Opportunities Programs, including the Pre-College Enrichment Program, where she researched Alzheimer’s disease and its association with certain inherited genes, and the Health Disparities Clinical Summer Research Fellowship Program, in which she conducted clinical research in the Hartford community. Elizabeth is an avid field hockey and basketball player and has a Jack Russell Terrier named Gypsy.
2012 Rowe Scholar: Ye Sun
Ye Sun enjoys reading and spending time outdoors, though she also spends some interesting time in the lab of Dr. Joanne Conover, looking at the physiological changes to the brain through aging. Originally born in Beijing, China, Ye now hails from Cheshire, Connecticut where she graduated from Cheshire High School. She is a Molecular and Cell Biology major as well as a member of the Combined Program in Medicine. Ye has served as Trip Director for the Philadelphia Healthcare Alternative Spring Break, where she serviced underprivileged populations in hospitals and nursing homes. She also volunteers with Collegiate Health Service Corps and a soup kitchen in Willimantic.
2012 Rowe Scholar: Hilary Sullivan
Hilary Sullivan has created an individualized major entitled ‘Health, Culture, and Society’ and is very interested in studying the anthropological and sociological influences on health care. A graduate of Daniel Hand High School, Hilary is from Madison, Connecticut. She has volunteered at Yale-New Haven’s Smilow Cancer Hospital where she has been inspired by the patients she’s met to pursue a career in health care. Because of her experience shadowing a pediatrician, Hilary is thinking about studying pediatrics. A huge fan of the German National Soccer Team, Hilary hopes to travel to Europe one day to watch them play.
2012 Rowe Scholar: Faith Crittenden
Faith Crittenden, from Windsor, Connecticut, enjoys swimming for relaxation. A Chemistry major, she graduated from Metropolitan Learning Center through which she participated in several of UCHC’s Health Career Opportunities Programs. She has shadowed at the Maternal and Fetal Care department and the Neonatology department at UCHC.
2012 Rowe Scholar: Jahnea Williams
Jahnea Williams, from Waterbury, Connecticut, graduated from Kennedy High School where she won the President’s Volunteer Service Award for completing over 100 hours of community service. Several of those hours were dedicated to participating in the Migrant Farm Workers Clinic, where she measured and recorded blood pressures and blood glucose levels. Jahnea plans to major in Biological Sciences at UConn.
2012 Rowe Scholar: Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith will be majoring in Biomedical Engineering at UConn while also taking courses required for the pre-med track. A resident of South Windsor, Connecticut, his career goals stem from a stint he spent in the hospital as a young child. Kevin also has an interest in math and science and graduated from South Windsor High School, where he participated in Model UN.
