Minimum GPA Requirement

The Honors Program reviews your cumulative grade point average (GPA) each year as part of the consideration of your progress toward the Honors graduation requirements. The annual process will determine if you are in “Honors good standing”, on “Honors GPA Notice”, or eligible for removal from the Honors Program due to GPA. Honors “good standing” and “Honors GPA Notice” are not listed on your transcript. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.400 is a requirement to graduate with Honors.

GPA Review for Continuation in Honors

  • Your academic record will be reviewed at the end of each academic year (typically in June) for compliance with the Honors minimum GPA requirement.
  • A minimum of a 3.400 is required to be in “good standing” with the Honors Program in regard to the Honors GPA requirements.
  • In addition to the Honors GPA requirement review, your academic record will be also be reviewed for compliance with the minimum Honors credit requirement through a separate process that typically initiates in late-July or early-August. You might receive notifications regarding both processes; if applicable, you will need to respond according to the instructions for both.
  • If your cumulative GPA falls below the minimum GPA of 3.400, you will be placed on Honors GPA Notice or eligible for removal from the Honors Program according to the details listed below.
  • Students placed on Honors GPA Notice or eligible for removal from the Honors Program will receive emails from the Honors Program during the summer indicating their status and the effective date.
  • If you receive notification that you are eligible for removal from the Honors Program and new grades post after you were notified, then you should include this information in your appeal.
  • If you were placed on Honors GPA Notice and new grades post after you were notified, then you may send an email to us at honors@uconn.edu to request a review of your Honors status.

Honors GPA Notice

Depending on their academic level (based on entry to UConn and expected graduation date, but not earned credits), Honors students with the following GPAs at the end of the academic year will be placed on Honors GPA Notice:

  • 3.000 – 3.399 GPA at the end of the FIRST YEAR,
  • 3.150  – 3.399 GPA at the end of the SOPHOMORE year, and
  • 3.300 – 3.399 GPA at the end of the JUNIOR year.

“Honors GPA Notice” is not listed on a student’s academic transcript.

Honors GPA Notice Appeals: Honors GPA Notice may only be appealed if students have GPA changes based on courses taken prior to the fall semester following the summer review. This includes newly completed grades from previous semesters and summer session courses. If you were placed on Honors GPA Notice and your GPA prior to the fall semester following the summer review is above 3.400, you may request reconsideration by emailing honors@uconn.edu.

Removal from the Honors Program

The minimum GPA required increases slightly at the end of each academic year as a student progresses through their undergraduate career. Depending on their academic level (based on entry to UConn and expected graduation date, but not earned credits), Honors students must have earned the following GPAs by the end of the academic year:

  • 3.000 GPA by the end of the FIRST YEAR (3 years remaining),
  • 3.150  GPA by the end of the SOPHOMORE year (2 years remaining), and
  • 3.300 GPA by the end of the JUNIOR year (1 year remaining).

If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirement, you may be eligible to be removed from the Honors Program.

Appealing Honors Removal Due to GPA

If you received a removal notice from the Honors Program because your cumulative GPA fell below the requirement for your academic level, you may Appeal your Honors Removal for any reason. If you have newly completed grades from previous semesters, expected summer session courses, intentions to repeat courses, or other plans to improve your GPA, you may include this information in your appeal along with any other relevant information. If you desire to remain in the Honors Program, you must submit an appeal no later than the posted deadline. Your appeal will be individually considered by members of the review committee and you will be notified of the decision regarding your continuation in the Honors Program by the date listed on the appeal form.

Honors Removal Appeal and University Leave of Absence: If you are considering a Leave of Absence, we encourage you to Appeal your Honors Removal by the deadline. Upon return to the University, your readmission to Honors will consider your Honors standing prior to your leave from the University.
