It is not uncommon for an Honors student to complete more than one undergraduate major while at UConn. Some students complete up to three. Generally, if you pursue more than one undergraduate major, you will complete just one for Honors in the Major. However, some ambitious students choose to do the additional work required to satisfy the Honors graduation requirements in more than one major. So, if you are game, it is a possibility!
Completing Honors in One Major
If you will graduate with one major, you must specify on your Preliminary Plan of Study and Final Plan of Study forms in which one you will be completing Honors Scholar designation.
Completing Honors in Multiple Majors
If you will graduate with multiple majors and want to earn the Honors Scholar designation in more than one of them, you must complete separate Preliminary Plan of Study and Final Plan of Study forms for each.
Honors Thesis or Creative Project
Generally, students with multiple Honors majors complete a separate thesis/project for each major.
You may be allowed to have a single thesis/project serve as your Honors thesis for multiple majors:
- Plan ahead! Your Honors advisor in each Honors major must approve this in advance.
- You may complete just one Honors thesis course, which would be listed on only one of your Honors Plans of Study.
- When you complete your thesis, your Honors advisor in each Honors major must approve it (in addition to your thesis supervisor).
Students Who Entered UConn Fall 2018 or later
Completing Honors in multiple majors require completing multiple sets of Honors Scholar in the Major requirements. The requirements for University Honors Laureate do not increase.
Honors Scholar in the Major
The Honors Plans of Study include 15 Honors credits in the major or related (approved by the Honors advisor), with 12 of those credits at the 2000-level or above and including a minimum of 3 credits for the thesis.
- These may not overlap between Honors majors.
- If you are completing a single thesis and will only have a single thesis course, you must replace that course with additional Honors credits in the other Honors major(s).
- Using these rules, the minimum number of Honors credits required for Honors Scholar in two majors is 30.
- With advisor approval, there may be overlap between the Engagement in the Major activities for multiple majors.
University Honors Laureate
All requirements for University Honors Laureate remain the same for students completing multiple Honors majors.
- The 6 additional Honors credits at the 2000-level or higher beyond those used toward Honors in the Major may come from the second Honors major
- Other distribution requirements (Honors Core, categories, and diversity & multiculturalism) may always be met through Honors in the Major courses
- Honors Co-Curricular Requirements need to be met and are not doubled
Using these rules, the minimum number of Honors credits required for University Honors Laureate with two Honors majors is 30. (This would require substantial planning and interdisciplinary work in one or both majors.)
Students Who Entered UConn prior to Fall 2018
The Honors Plans of Study include 12 Honors credits in the major or related, including 3 for the thesis.
- These may not overlap between Honors majors.
- If you are completing a single thesis and will only have a single thesis course, you must replace that course with additional Honors credits in the other Honors major(s).
The 3 additional Honors credits beyond the 12 in the major, including the Honors breadth and depth requirements, may overlap between Honors majors. Using these rules, the minimum number of Honors credits required for Honors Scholar in two majors is 24.
Your transcript and diploma will contain the notation "Honors Scholar" on each degree containing an Honors major. If multiple majors are within a single degree, the Honors Scholar notation will appear once.
